Work to build a Rs 4.5-crore golden car for Lord Saneeswara Temple at Tirunallar in the district began today, the temple executive officer A Vikranth Raja said.
Puducherry Agriculture Minister R Kamalakannan inaugurated the work.
The temple already has two wooden cars.
Raja said though the administration decided to have the golden carin 2014, work did not begin till now. The car would be 15 feet high and eight feet wide, he said.
It is being constructed using eight kg gold, copper plates and teak wood, said the official.
The work, being funded by the devotees, would be completed in four months, he added.
