drowned while fishing in the Mahananda River in Kishanganj district of Bihar today, around 350 km east of the state capital.
Kishanganj Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Mohammad Shafiq said the incident happened in the stretch of the swirling river behind Agriculture College at Adabari under Pothiya block.
"The youth, identified as Mohammad Yakub of Geramari, was fishing in the river. He lost his step in the fast current of water and drowned. We have sent officials and professional divers to search for his body," Shafiq said.
The SDO said Mahananda river was currently in spate due to Monsoon rains and added people should not enter the river for fishing or bathing.
