According to police, the incident took place last evening when about a dozen friends were celebrating a birthday at a residence in the Bapraula Vihar area of Ranhola.
During the party, an argument broke out between two youths, identified as Vijender and Johnny, following which the former shot at the latter in a fit of rage.
Police said that the bullet "pierced his (Johnny's) chest and then went on to graze Sanjay's waist".
Police have booked an attempt to murder case against Vijender and his friends and have launched a search for them.
