Satish Chandra Sinha poured kerosene on himself and was about to set fire when a journalist noticed him and snatched the matchbox from him. He was overpowered with the help of other people and police men.
The youth, a resident of Hisua block in Nawada, had married a girl from a minority community in July last year. Her family opposed the marriage and when she visited her maternal grandmother on June 22 this year she was forcibly taken away by them.
Meanwhile, he had received a letter from his wife saying that her family was not only forcibly preventing her return they were also planning her second marriage to someone from their community.
Sinha said he had then approached the court and the Nawada chief judicial magistrate had directed Narhat police station to rescue his wife. But the police were yet to take any action.
"I do not want to lose my wife, but it seems there is no other option left for the poor except to commit suicide. Nobody is bothered about my case," he said.
