Protesting against the incident, YSR Congress Party workers allegedly ransacked a Tahsildar's office and set two bikes on fire, they said.
"Prasad Reddy was murdered by unidentified persons. He was an accused in a triple murder case of 2003. Police suspect his murder was in retaliation to that incident," Anantapur district Superintendent of Police Rajsekhar Babu said.
Reddy who was Rapthadu mandal convener was killed after being attacked by a group of three-four persons who were carrying knives and sickles at the Rapthadu Tahsildar office premises, police said.
Meanwhile, YSR Congress strongly condemned Reddy's murder and demanded an inquiry into all political killings.
The party further alleged that law and order situation has worsened in the state with YSRCP leaders and workers being targeted by the ruling (TDP) party leaders.
