The cable channel Lifetime TV announced it via Twitter on June 29, posting a statement.
"We are sad Zendaya will no longer portray Aaliyah. Production is currently on hold," the statement read.
Reasons of her departure are not disclosed yet.
The film would follow the life of the 22-year-old star, who was killed in a plane crash as she was returning to the US post recording a music video in the Bahamas.
