About 200 people were feared killed and 500 others injured when a devastating fire swept through a number of temporary sheds constructed for a religious conference here yesterday.

Officials said that about 300 people with serious burn injuries had been admitted to the district hospital.

Director-general of police A B Tripathy said that at least 100 people were burnt to death while more bodies were being recovered from under the debris.

The officials said that over 5,000 devotees of Swami Nigamananda attending a conference here were trapped when the sheds caught fire. Startled people in the neighbourhood tried to douse the flames which spread quickly. There was a stampede among the people to escape as they were encircled by the fire.
