Three more districts - Koppal, Gadag and Haveri - came into being in Karnataka yesterday. With this the number of districts in the state rose to 26 and will go up by one more with Patel scheduled to inaugurate Udupi district today.

Chief Minister J H Patel declared that small districts were being created with a view to fulfil the aspirations of the people. Addressing public meetings at the new district headquarters, he emphasised that the reason behind the move to form small districts was to bring the government closer to the people and initiate marked improvements in administration and law and order.

Union human resources development minister S R Bommai, who was among the host of dignitaries present, announced that he would take up the twin issues of providing assistance for improving irrigation facilities and setting up of industrial centres in the newly formed districts with the Centre.
