Six senior Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) executives were killed after a company plane in which they were travelling crashed near Dungargarh, 80 km off Bhilai, on Monday.

The debris of the plane was recovered yesterday after an intensive search was conducted by state authorities, the directorate-general of civil aviation (DGCA), the Indian Air Force and a team from Bhilai steel plant. The DGCA has instituted an enquiry into the crash.

The aircraft was being piloted by SAIL executive director and chief of aviation Captain Mohan Verghese.

Apart from Capt Verghese, the other officials who died in the accident included director (operations) S M Aeron, executive director (operations) T K Ghosh, additional director K S Chandra, U K Sharma, general manager (projects)at the Bhilai steel plant, and K Padmanabh, senior manager in the chairmans secretariat.

The six-seater plane took off from New Delhi at 4:00 pm on Monday. It was cleared for landing at Bhilai at 6:20 pm that evening. Immediately thereafter, it lost contact with the control tower. The wreckage of the plane was later recovered at Chaklitala near Dungargarh.
