AN, formerly Australian National, is the remainder of the federal government's rail operations left after profitable elements were merged with some state services to form the National Rail Corporation in 1993. Track ownership has also been separated from AN and what is left is a collection freight and passenger services burdened with more than A$1 billion in debt and expected to lose about A$250 million in the fiscal year to June 30.
