Bajaj Auto will be showcasing the Legend scooter at the Cologne International Motorshow in September along with a few other scooter models. Legend is the word's first four-stroke geared scooter, and has nine patents pending for the various technologies that has gone into its making. R.L. Ravichandran, vice president, business and product development, Bajaj Auto, said two-wheeler importers from across the world have shown interest in the concept.
Ravichandran added that the first goal is to launch the scooter successfully in the domestic market in a phased manner since the Legend has created a new found excitement amongst scooter buyers in the country.
The legendary looks of the Vespa, which Bajaj has retained for the Legend all though it is an all new scooter, is expected to find a niche in select markets. These are the markets where the original Vespa and Bajaj models are no longer sold since even the modern day versions still uses two stroke engines. The Legend may also find a niche market in the US where the two-stroke motorcycles and scooters have been banned for years but the Vespa nostalgia is still alive. The new models on the anvil are a E-Spirit, a 60CC two-speed automatic scooterette, Sapphire, an all-new four stroke scooter with contemporary design and fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) body panels, a four-stroke, step-through in the M80 class and a 175 CC four-stroke cruiser motorcycle made in association with Kawasaki of Japan.
