The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) yesterday threatened to launch a countrywide agitation if the government hiked the price of petrol and petroleum products as stated by Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral in his recent interview.

Briefing newsmen here, BJP spokesman Yashwant Sinha said let this government be warned that no fresh price hike will be tolerated.

He said the Left has been opposing the proposed petroleum price hike but its protestation was of little consequence. In any event, since it is a constituent of the United Front, it automatically becomes party to this anti-people measure, he said.

Sinha also took strong exception to the government decision to allow import of coarse rice by private sector saying that the government could have offered better remunerative price to farmers.

He said this move by the government was done to please the World Trade Organisation (WTO) which is scheduled to meet in Geneva shortly.

He said the government decision to allow import of rice would only harm farmers as they would not be able to sell their produce.

Sinha also took exception to the Samajwadi Party criticising the Prime Minister for sharing a platform with the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, at Aonla where he had gone to inaugurate a project.

He said such remarks revealed the attitude of the Samajwadi Party and in a democracy there should be consensus rather than such statements by a political party.
