Venu Srinivasan, chairman of CII (southern region), said the chamber has decided to focus on local action and issues while leveraging on its national strength in providing a competitive thrust to the region. For the first time, CII has constituted focus groups at the regional and state levels to deal with urban infrastructure issues in several southern cities and towns.

The southern chapter plans to make `total cost management' (TCM) as a movement in industry. A host of programmes are being planned to make TCM a major tool for competitiveness.

It will work out strategies with Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra to model their tourism policy on Kerala, which transformed this sector into a successful source of income. The chamber plans to develop a southern tourism circuit by involving the four state governments for building up common infrastructure.

It plans to set up an `exchange' to help small and medium industries to apply information technology in their industry.

The CII feels that the state governments have failed to cut down bureaucratic delays in step with the reforms announced at the Central level.
