Goof-Up?

This is with reference to the news item CBI uncovers CRB link to granite firm ( June 7).

It appears that neither CBI nor your correspondent knows that the name of the referred granite company Jaihind Granite Industries Ltd was changed to CRB Corporation Ltd on September 30, 1994. If this basic checking had been done, the uncovering would not have been unduly credited to CBI nor reported so sensationally.

The credibility is further damaged by a CBI officials remark: We are at a loss to understand how Sebi missed this investment while drawing up a list of companies of the group despite the fact that Jaihind is a listed company. This is a totally unfair allegation against Sebi which had, in fact, included the name of CRB Corp in its list.

Unfortunately, such is the dismal state of information resou- rces in our country that it often leads to goof-ups and also hampers any investigation process. Worse, at times it becomes a blessing for the culprits.
