As your editorial Globally uncompetitive (Aug 15) has rightly said, though India may have achieved a lot since independence, we are left in the same place because other countries have progressed faster. This applies not only in the competitiveness of the economy but in many other respects also. The wheat muddle in which we have lost the best opportunity to make our presence felt in the global wheat trade - the rejection of Indian wheat earlier by Turkey and Morocco and at present by Poland clearly indicates that we have not learnt any lesson from the past.
