The planned cut in NTT's workforce is part of the company's overall review of its operations, NTT said in a statement.

NTT is reviewing its telephone directory enquiry service, sales and maintenance activities, and operations related to software development, it said without elaborating.

The software development-related business will be transferred to a new subsidiary that will be set up in March 1997.

NTT president Junichiro Miyazu told a news conference that about 10,000 NTT employees were now involved in the software development-related business, including the design of local area networks.

NTT will also transfer sales and maintenance of telecommunications equipment to one of its units in the 1996-97 business year while its telephone directory enquiry service will be transferred to another unit by the end of 1998-99, Miyazu said.

Miyazu said NTT hopes to raise its fees for the directory service, but added that nothing has been decided.
