Indian scientists have developed a biobleaching process that offers a clean technology for making paper. The process, developed in cooperation with the paper industry, uses an enzyme produced by a fungus isolated by scientists of the National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) in Goa. Pretreatment with the enzyme increases the brightness of the bagasse pulp, thereby reducing the quantity of chlorine needed for bleaching.
