Share prices rose further sharply on the last day of the current settlement on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) yesterday following heavy all-round speculative buying. The NSE-50 index opened better at 980 and touched 1,007.75. It ended at 1,002.35, a gain of 22.50 over the last close of 979.85.
The dollar NSE-50 (Defty) index, closed at 881.70, disclosing a good gain of Rs 23.85 over the previous close of 857.85. The Midcap index, after a better start at 1,103.85, rose further to 1,116.20, before closing at 1,113.90, displaying a rise of 10.30 over the last level of 1,103.60.
The market saw a turnover worth Rs 1,416.58 crores from 525.10 lakh shares in 1,65,242 trades. Debentures turnover was Rs 84.03 lakh. The most actively traded securities were ITC with a total turnover of Rs 417.61 crores followed by Tata Tea with Rs 265.74 crores, RIL with Rs 155.62 crores and SBI-N with Rs 143.43 crores.
Other actively traded securities were ACC (Rs 73.99 crs), Castrol (Rs 57.83 crs), Telco (Rs 34.44 crs), Colgate (Rs 29.39 crs), Tisco (Rs 28.12 crs), HLL (Rs 24.89 crs), MTNL (Rs 23.10 crs), P&G (Rs 20.16 crs), Infosystch (Rs 19.10 crs), Bajaj Auto (Rs 13.35 crs), Bhel (Rs 9.79 crs), L&T (Rs 7.89 crs), Satyamcomp (Rs 6.42 crs), Nicolaspir (Rs 5.82 crs), BSES (Rs 5.74 crs), Pentsfware (Rs 5.19 crs), Corpbank (Rs 5.11 crs), Sterlite (Rs 4.80 crs), Guj Amb Cem (Rs 3.45 crs), Hero Honda (Rs 2.68 crs) and ICICI (Rs 2.52 crs).
Todays top gainers were Glaxo Rs 385.70 (Rs 362.90), MTNL Rs 250.10 (Rs 236.20), Ashok Leyland Rs 41.85 (Rs 39.65), HLL Rs 1,316.30 (Rs 1,253.40) and Telco Rs 289.20 (Rs 276.00).
The major losers were Cochin Ref. Rs 156.55 (Rs 160.00), Thermax Rs 177.45 (Rs 181.00), IPCL Rs 63 (Rs 64.25), HDFC Rs 2939 (Rs 2952.35) and Ranbaxy Rs 697.85 (Rs 701).
Meanwhile share prices eased on Otcei on lack of buying support. The composite index closed at 107.03, showing a small fall of 0.34 point from the last close of 107.37. The total turnover during the day was Rs 35.32 lakh from 57,900 shares and debentures.
Listed equity contributed Rs 3.55 lakh involving 36,000 shares while, contribution from listed debentures was Rs 5.79 lakh from 6,100 debentures.
