The Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) produced 7.9 million tonnes of saleable steel between April 1996 and January 1997, three per cent more than in the corresponding period a year earlier, steel minister Birendra Prasad Baishya said on Tuesday. He said SAILs finished steel output between April 1996 and January 1997 was about 18.72 million tonnes, an increase of about 11.6 per cent compared with the same period a year earlier.
