Tn Govt Raises Sugarcane Price

The Tamil Nadu government has fixed a price of Rs 599 per tonne for sugarcane with 8.5 per cent recovery for the year 1996-97. The increased sugarcane price would benefit nearly 3.5 lakh farmers in the state, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi said here yesterday. Karunanidhi, also ordered yesterday that the sugar crushing mills would hereafter pay the entire rent for transporting sugarcane up to a distance of ten km, as against up to 20 km hitherto.
