The strategy to promote Indian tourism in the world market will be thrashed out at the `Overseas Marketing Meet beginning today in New Delhi.

The two-day event, to be attended by the regional directors of overseas tourism offices and state governments officials, will discuss sub-regional plans for specific markets and identify new potential pockets to promote Indian tourism.

The meet will also consider reorganising some of the tourism offices abroad, in view of the changing trends in international travel and geo-political environment.

One out of every two tourists travelling to South Asia visits India. Total earnings from the sector during 1996 was over Rs 10,000 crore, making tourism the third largest foreign exchange earner for the country.

The meet will discuss plans to encourage tourist inflow during the lean season by adopting need-based marketing policy and focusing on certain pockets.

Apart from a discussion on the proposed draft policy on tourism, the issue of evolving a mechanism to check fall in tourist arrival in the event of a calamity, is likely to be taken up at the meet.
