Train Mishaps Down

Seventeen per cent of all rail accidents take place at unmanned level crossings numbering over 20,000 in the country, while derailments account for 74 per cent of mishaps, according to official figures. pti

The number of railway accidents has marginally come down from 398 in 1995-96 to 377 in 1996-97. Of this, the number of accidents involving passenger trains was 186 in 1995-96 and 160 the following year.
