The all india Motor Transport Congress (AIMTC) has begun mounting pressure on the government and has begun advising customers to stop shipments from August 16 for distances beyond 2000 kilo metres.
An AIMTC release said here today that that this was being in order to adhere to the strike call from the midnight of August 22. The " indefinite strike call was in view of the fact that no decision had so far been taken on thier charter of demands.
The main demands of the congress includes a rollback in the hike in rates of motor insurance premiums, abolition of toll tax, toll on bridges, and removal of octroi check-posts. Last year a nine-day nationwide strike by the congress, which paralysed road transport activites, was called off following an agreement between the union ministry of finance and aimtc on april nine, 1997.
