Two-wheeler major TVS Suzuki is all set to launch its four stroke scooter next month, which will spearhead the company's foray into the scooter market. Tentatively named the Neon, the scooter has an average mileage of 60 km per litre.
The company is scouting for an appropriate name for the product. The scooter is expected to be priced at around Rs 37,000 per unit. It proposes to produce 18,000 units in the first year.
The indigenously designed 4-stroke scooter would be available in four models and will be powered by either a 125 cc or 150 cc engine. Production is expected to peak up to two and a half lakh units in five years time. Scooters accounts for 47% of all the two-wheelers sold in the country. TVS will initially target the Delhi market, and plans to subsequently move on to the other cities. The two-wheeler major is also developing a step through model and another four stroke motorcycle, which are expected to be launched by next year.
The past few years have seen the company's sales graph soar at twice the industry growth rate. In 1995-96, while the overall market grew by about 20% to cross 2.6 million vehicles, TVS's volumes moved up by 42% to 4.1 lakh units. Turnover rose by about 50 per cent, to touch Rs 622 crore, while profit-before-tax rose 63 per cent to Rs 60.3 crore.
The company holds a 42 per cent volume share in the market for mopeds - placed at six lakh units.
Its standard model, TVS XL, a sturdy moped aimed at the semi-urban and rural rider, sold around 1.6 lakh units in 1995-96. The more urbane TVS Champ and Super Champ accounted for the rest.
