The American Amusement Machinery Association (AAMA) is eyeing India as a base for developing the amusement games industry in South East Asia and West Asia in the next five to seven years. A 30-member US delegation, comprising leading companies in the amusement games industry, is currently holding an exhibition of amusement machines in New Delhi under the aegis of AAMA.
AAMAs main target in India is the middle class since they are the ones who have a dispensable income and are looking for ways and means to spend it on wholesome entertainment says AAMA president Robert Fay.
In the wired age, it is technology which is the driving force behind the entire entertainment industry, he adds.
The 45 booths in the exhibition, where some of the most sophisticated games machinery are on display, has already attracted queries from interested parties.
Says Thomas Kane, secretary of AAMA, We have been receiving individual enquiries from departmental store owners and others like real estate owners even if they are not involved in the entertainment business.
The Indian amusement games industry is a nascent one. Most of the operators import used machines from abroad and there are a only a few manufacturers of machines, Kane said.
Moreover, there are almost no coin-operated machines. Leisure games, bowling in particular, are just about making their way into the amusement games industry in the country.
