Belgium vs New Zealand Quarterfinal, Hockey World Cup: Red Lions beat the Kiwis 2-0, march to semis

 

After pulsating crossovers, the two quarterfinals have turned out to be a slow show in comparison. Belgium have overcome New Zealand in the second quarterfinal 2-0 and both the goals came in the first half itself. The Red Lions were without the services of one of their legends Alexander Hendrickx who has gotten injured. 

 

The two goals were scored by Tom Boon and Florent Van Aubel in the 10th and 15th respectively. Since then no more goals were scored even as Belgium got two and New Zealand three penalty corners after the second goal of the game. 

 

Belgium will now face the winner of the quarterfinal match between Netherlands and Korea.

Nic Woods, the skipper of New Zealand has been shown the yellow card and has been asked to sit on the bench for the next five minutes. The card was shown for not playing to the whistle

At the start of the last quarter, New Zealand have been able to create a chance for themselves with a penalty corner, which is their second of the game. But once again, the conversion is not there and they falter again.

The Belgians have been all over the Kiwis in the first half with 70% possession, 12 circle penetrations, two penalty corners and no cards to them. They also have three shots on goal. On the other hand, the Blackstics have had 30% possession, only one penalty corner, three circle penetrations and just a single shot on goal.

Belgium vs New Zealand Quarterfinal, Hockey World Cup: Kiwis get the first short corner, Vincent Vanasch saves

 

This is a brilliant save from Vincent Vansach as the Kiwis made their first attacking move of the match through Sam Lane and got the penalty corner. Simon Child made a great injection and Kane Russell was on to it in a flash and shot at the Belgian goal. But the wall called Vincent Vansach was there to save the shot once again. At the end of the first half, it’s Belgium 2-0 New Zealand.

The second game of the night has begun in Bhubaneshwar and Belgium, the reigning world and Olympics champions would take on New Zealand, who beat hosts India in the cross-overs to get to the quarterfinal. Whoever wins this one, will face the winner of the quarterfinal between the Netherlands and Korea.
