Bharti begins talks to buy stake in MTN

India's largest mobile operator Bharti Airtel today said that it had initiated discussions to acquire a stake in South Africa's MTN, which has operations in 21 African and West Asian countries.

"Bharti Airtel Ltd has entered into an exploratory discussion with MTN Group Ltd, South Africa. Current discussions are still at an early stage, are exploratory in nature and may or may not lead to any transaction," the Indian telecom operator said in a statement late in the evening.

On April 25, Bharti had said that it had not discussed a bid with its board and refused to discuss
