Pune-headquartered ByondTech Electronics Private Limited, a part of the Canpex Group, expects 15 per cent market share in the low-cost tablet market. The company is looking at selling 500,000 tablets in a year’s time, said chief executive officer Prashant Bora.

Launching ‘mibook’ - its tablet series here on Friday, he said, “The current annual demand may double to 6 million tablets in the coming year.” The ‘mibook’ tablets, which are priced between Rs 4,300 and Rs 11,000, feature android v4.0.4 with Ice Cream Sandwich operating system, kinetic scrolling touch pad, among others and enables 3D video and gaming.

ByondTech had launched ‘mibook’ series on e-commerce sites first last week, and had sold 4,000 units.

The company is targeting to achieve Rs 300 crore turnover (Rs 220 crore last year) by this year end and plans to set up a mobile-handset and an assembly unit in Pune, Prashanth S Mutha, vice president (administration), said.

The plant will come up with an investment of $5 million (around Rs 27 crore) with production capacity of 30,000 units per month.

The company, which entered the mobile handsets business in 2009, has a joint venture manufacturing and R&D centre in Shenzhen, China, with a production capacity of 400,000 mobile handsets and 100,000 tablets every month.

For tablets and smart phones, the company has invested around $10 million.
