The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) is exploring the option of selecting two operators to implement mobile number portability (MNP), as opposed to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India’s (Trai’s) recommendation of having one centralised player.
The DoT, which is the licensor for telecom services in the country, is also looking at a different selection process for MNP licences, which will not be similar to the existing mode of tendering, sources said.
MNP enables subscribers to retain their existing numbers when shifting from one operator to another. Many countries have implemented the system, and the DoT is planning to introduce the service in the four metros by the end of this year.
The standing committee of the DoT, which was formed to look into the rollout of the services, is currently examining the Trai recommendations on MNP. The regulator supports a single MNP operator, arguing that it would ensure better coordination between various service providers.
