E-commerce is finally catching a fancy among the buyers in India. eBay India, a 100 per cent subsidiary of eBay Inc one of the leading e-commerce hub in India , has observed a surge in the number of e-commerce hubs in India from 2,500 last year to 3,300 this year.
Arun Srinivasan, head (retention marketing), eBay India while speaking to media persons on the sidelines of the conference maintained rural towns in India have been reporting active buying and selling trends. Srinivasan was here to announce the launching of the third edition of eBay India census 2010.
The third census findings revealed, Punjab managing to find a place among top 10 e-commerce states in India .The census by eBay India was conducted across 28 states and seven union territories.
Srinivasan said, “Chandigarh, Haryana and Punjab have improved their ranking in the census compared to the previous year”. The improve in ranking has been fostered by an increase in export from states like Punjab and keen interest of people from the region going in for purchase of tech-savvy products. While Punjab has improved its ranking from 11th to 10th this year, Haryana has moved up to 8th position from 9th position last year. Similarly Chandigarh has improved its position to 9th from 10 th last year.
India’s top five e-commerce hubs are Delhi, followed by Mumbai, Jaipur, Chennai and Bangalore. The census also revealed, rural Indians are active online shoppers with online shopping being active in 1,054 rural towns across India. Rural India featured in eBay Census for the second year with rural towns witnessing active buying and selling trends. India’s top five rural hubs are Ambalapuzha (Kerala), Sajiyavadar (Gujarat), Adala (Gujarat), Abdalipur (West Bengal) and Kangayampalayam (Tamil Nadu).
In the case of exports, northern India exports the most at 52 per cent followed by the western regions of the country at 31 per cent. As far as imports are concerned, southern India tops the chart with 38 per cent while northern India stands second at 29 per cent.
Technology has got the massive share of Chandigarh’s online shoppers’ wallets with 49 per cent of all transactions while lifestyle-dominated imports stand at 50 per cent. Chandigarh entrepreneurs sold the most technological products at 67 per cent of all transactions with the buyers in India. Technology also scored on the exports front at 54 per cent of all transactions.
