Next time someone complains about the lack of research in education in India, ask them to meet the young ones who were at the Intel Science Talent Discovery Fair.

Interesting projects, such as a novel technique to find the cube root, role of fungi as a pesticide or a augmentative communication device, were done by students who were in classes from 8-12 standard from across the country.

The numbers' Nearly 15,000 schools across the country were touched by Intel to rope in, inculcate and tap the future researchers. Eight young innovators, four individual projects and two team projects, get to participate and display their brilliance at the global science talent hunt organised by Intel in the US.

Said Frank Jones, MD, Intel India: "The talent is amazing. There has been overwhelming response for this event, which we are holding for the seventh year. This is an event aimed at infusing the spirit of discovery in school children and increasing their interest in science and technology.

These six projects were selected after a series of ongoing activities and workshops that are conducted throughout the year. These sessions are a platform for children to interact with people from scientific community, with scientists playing the role of mentors for students and helping them with insights on their projects.

Added Jones: "It is an endeavour to create an atmosphere where students can reach and discover unique scientific solutions to everyday problems. Over 120 eminent personalities from institute like IITs from Mumbai, Delhi, Chennai, Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Delhi and Anna Universities, IISc, ISRO, Council of Scientific and Industrial Research are supporting this programme and the ecosystem of research is growing under their guidance."
