Amidst Maharashtra’s efforts to have faster and more efficient governance and easier access to information, a significant development has taken it one notch further. The state recently got its MSWAN (Maharashtra State Wide Area Network) implemented.

Through the network, the state government has created an integrated community encompassing 35 districts, 323 talukas, 6 divisional commissioner offices, and several hundred horizontal offices all connected with the state headquarters in Mantralaya, Mumbai.

The system will help citizens get certificates like 7/12 land extract, passports, domicile certifcates, various affidavits and the like.

The total cost of the project is about Rs 104 crore for vertical connectivity and has been implemented in partnership the by ITI- Spanco consortium. The project is on boot basis for 5 years. SWAN is part of the core infrastructure under the National e-Governance Plan (NeGP) instituted by Government of India (GOI).

With the MSWAN system, a reliable, integrated and robust telecommunications infrastructure catering to high speed and high capacity delivery of voice, data and video transmissions is expected to be in place.

The infrastructure is based on an open standard and has been designed to be interoperable and scalable in addition to enabling connectivity to various government departments.

Most importantly, it will help improve the service delivery and response time to the citizens of Maharashtra enabling quick access to information along with greater transparency and accountability.
