At a time when the semi-conductor industry is likely to witness cosolidation of bigger players globally together with a slowdown in growth on account of the economic downturn, it is the opportune moment for India to develop its infrastructure and plan ahead.

"The semiconductor industry will experience a 10 to 15 per cent contraction in 2009-10 which is seen as a difficult year. According to inputs from our executives in Silicon Valley, a major part of 2010 is also going to be tough play", said Pradip K Dutta, corporate vice president & managing director of Synopsis India, an electronics design automation company that provided software tools for semi-conductor chip designers.

Synopsis as a company has decided to focus on key customers and key products, as not everyone would be designing every chip. "Collaborative techniques and networking of enterprises is the key to success in an environment like this", Dutta added.

Admitting that the IT industry would experience slower growth in the coming few quarters, West Bengal's IT minister Debesh Das said, "Recession actually gives one time to think afresh and chalk out plans for the future. In normal times one tends to follow the trend. It is now time to build infrastructure and resources." The main resource is the talent pool, agreed experts from the industry here.
