IT major Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has promoted executive vice president N Chandrasekaran as Chief Operating Officer (COO), even as it elevated four executive vice presidents as directors.

With this expansion, the company board will have 12 members, including six independent directors, the Tata group company said in a release here today.

Prior to the promotion, Chandrasekaran was also the head of the company's global operations. He was also named as the director of the company.

S Mahalingam will continue to be the chief financial officer (CFO).

The other three executive vice-presidents, apart from Chandrasekaran, are S Mahalingam, S Padmanabhan and P A Vandrevala.

On the managerial changes, CEO and MD, S Ramadorai said, "Given the size of the company's business, the directors have decided to induct four senior executives on its board. The newly appointed executive directors have a wealth of experience and have contributed significantly to the growth and success of TCS and will continue play an important role in the company's future strategy."

The company has six independent directors. They are Ron Sommer, former chairman of Deutsche Telecom, Harvard professor Clayton Christensen; former HSBC chief, Aman Mehta; former Indian cabinet secretary, Naresh Chandra; head of GlaxoSmithkline, Asia, V.
