Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) is setting up a large unit in Lucknow under the Software Technology Park of India (STPI) scheme.

According to sources close to the development, the unit is part of the expansion plans drawn up by the Tatas for Lucknow. It is scheduled to be operational by July this year

Spread over a multi-acre campus, the TCS unit will have state-of-the-art facilities. Among the most modern in Uttar Pradesh, it will cater to clients from countries like US, Canada, South Africa and Singapore.

The unit is being set up in an ultra-modern, multi-storied complex with a green campus environment and requisite support systems like ATMs, conference rooms, auditorium, cafeteria, gymnasium and amphi theater.

One of the basic requirements for the IT sector to boom in a place is ample qualified persons.

With top of the line academic institutions like the Indian Institute of Management, (IIM) Lucknow and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, Lucknow is emerging as a good destination for the IT and IT-enabled services (ITES) industry.

According to one estimate, over 10 per cent of the country's top technical manpower comes from Uttar Pradesh, with Lucknow, Kanpur, Allahabad and Varanasi being key centres providing these resources.

Moreover, around 45, 000 engineering and computer science students graduate annually from UP-based colleges.
