Borealis and Asmidal plan to set up melamine facility in Algeria

Borealis, the Austria-based manufacturer of polyolefins, base chemicals and fertilisers, has signed an agreement with Asmidal to explore the possibility of setting up a melamine manufacturing facility in Algeria. A feasibility study for this project will be carried out during upcoming months and a final investment decision is expected to be taken in 2017.

Melamine has become an essential raw material in the global production of synthetic resins. 

As one of the global market leaders in melamine production, Borealis produces around 130,000 tonnes of melamine per year, 80 percent of which is destined for the wood-based panel industry. In the manufacture of everyday objects used in the kitchen or around the house, melamine also plays an important role, for example as one component used to make handles for pots and pans. Melamine is also commonly used in the construction, automotive and furniture industries.
