The German fine chemicals specialist Cabb Group has started production of monochloroacetic acid (MCA) in China, the world’s largest market for this substance. The plant, an investment of Euro 15 million carried out in a joint venture with Chinese company Jining Gold Power, is likely the country’s most modern MCA plant and utilises the latest German hydrogenation technology.

It will produce around 25,000 metric tonnes of monochloroacetic acid a year, initially as flakes only, and later on in liquid state as well. The plant’s central location in Jining, Shandong province, is ideal for supplying local customers as well as multinationals in the greater Beijing and Shanghai regions.

“China is responsible for half of global MCA demand, and this demand is growing at an above-average rate. Now, we are serving this market with local production that sets benchmarks in quality, safety and sustainability,” explained Dr Uwe Brunk, general manager of the acetyls business unit at Cabb.

Peter Vanacker, Cabb Group’s CEO, added, “This investment is a central component in our company’s global growth strategy.”

Cabb is one of the leading and fastest growing international manufacturers of chemical intermediates and finished products, and supplies customers in the agrochemicals and pharmaceuticals industry as well as in the field of specialty chemicals and performance products. Headquartered at Frankfurt, Cabb operates six production sites in Knapsack and Gersthofen (Germany), Pratteln (Switzerland), Kokkola (Finland), Ahmedabad (India) and Jining (China). With around 1,000 employees, Cabb recorded an annual turnover of around Euro 480 million in 2015.
