DCM Shriram increases chlor alkali capacity by 420 tonnes

As part of its expansion project, DCM Shriram Ltd, a diversified group of companies active in chemicals, textiles, alcohol and sugar, has increased its chlor alkali capacity by 420 tonne per day (TPD) at Bharuch plant.
 
"The company has today commissioned 420 TPD of additional chlor alkali capacity at its unit Shriram Alkali and Chemicals, Bharuch (Gujarat) as a first phased of its expansion project. The balance chlor alkali capacity and power expansion project will be commissioned in phases by September-October 2016," said DCM Shriram in a BSE filing on June 14, 2016.
 
The production at Bharuch will increase by 250 TPD till the commissioning of power expansion project. This increased production will be achieved over the next two weeks.
 
The total chlor alkali capacity of DCM Shriram has gone up to 1200 TPD with effective from June 14, 2016, it added.
 
The two main products of a chlor alkali plant are chlorine and caustic soda. One of the major usage of chlorine is in the manufacturing engineering materials – polymers, resins and elastomers – with PVC plastics being the single largest end user. Caustic soda, also known as sodium hydroxide, is used in various industries (eg metallurgy, aluminium, glass, soap, detergents and textiles).
