The Centre is working on policy to increase the manufacturing capabilities of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) in India. In a written reply in the Rajya Sabha, Nihal Chand, Minister of State for Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, said that a committee of secretaries has been constituted to study and identify the APIs of critical importance. The committee is under the Chairmanship of the Secretary, Department of Health Research; and has the Secretary, Department of Pharmaceuticals, the Secretary, Department of Health, the Secretary, Department of Commerce, the Secretary, Deportment of Industrial Policy & Promotion and the Member Secretary of the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council (NMCC) as its members.
The committee has been given the mandate to work out a package of interventions /concessions required to build domestic production capabilities in this area and examine the related cost implications. Nihal Chand informed the house that the report of this Committee is awaited.
