Govt appoints Mathew, Sinha, Akbaruddin as part-time RBI board directors

The central government has appointed former bureaucrat Annie George Mathew, economist Janmejaya Sinha and former diplomat Syed Akbaruddin as part-time, non-official directors on the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for a four-year term effective from August 24, 2026, the central bank said on Monday.
The current strength of the board is 14, including the governor and deputy governors, apart from Anuradha Thakur, secretary, Department of Economic Affairs, and Sanjay Lohiya, secretary, Department of Financial Services (DFS).
The other members include Revathy Iyer and Sachin Chaturvedi.
Last week, the government appointed former ISRO Chairman Somnath S and reappointed Anand Mahindra, chairman, Mahindra Group, to the central board.
Mathew is a former special secretary in the Department of Expenditure, Ministry of Finance, and is also a full-time member of the Sixteenth Finance Commission. She is an officer of the Indian Audit and Accounts Service and has over 30 years of experience in public finance, financial management, government audit and accounts.
Janmejaya Sinha is an economist and management consultant. He is chairman, Boston Consulting Group (BCG) India, and has also served as chairman of BCG Asia-Pacific. He has also been part of several regulatory committees.
Akbaruddin is a former Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations and a former spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs. He is currently serving as the dean of the Kautilya School of Public Policy in Hyderabad.
Some of the members whose terms ended this year included Satish Marathe, Swaminathan Gurumurthy, Venu Srinivasan, Pankaj Ramanbhai Patel and Ravindra H. Dholakia, apart from the government officials. The government had renominated Revathy Iyer and Sachin Chaturvedi as part-time, non-official directors on the Central Board of the Reserve Bank of India on September 18, 2022, for a period of four years.
