Coimbatore, Oct 26 (ANI): Hours after giving birth, a mother elephant rescued her newborn calf from a dry canal on the outskirts of Coimbatore city in Tamil Nadu. The scene was witnessed by a throng of curious villagers, who took out their phones to record the struggling calf being helped by its mother. The ten-year old pregnant elephant had strayed from a forest into Ponnuthu village just 30 minutes from Coimbatore, to eat banana leaves. Villagers, alerted by its loud cries, came out to see what the matter was and saw that the elephant had given birth. But scared of the sudden visitors, the mother scrambled back to the forest and in the way her calf fell into a dry canal, about five feet deep. While the mother climbed out of the canal, the poor calf was left to scramble, still getting used to its feet. The mother then gently pushed the baby elephant with her legs after two hours, as villagers applauded her effort. The family then made its way back to the forest.
