63K challans for drunk driving issued in Haryana this year, 25K in Gurugram

As many as 63,073 challans have been issued for drunk driving in Haryana so far this year, with Gurugram accounting for nearly 25,000 of them, officials said on Wednesday. According to an official statement, the district-wise data shows the highest number of challans from January 1 till November 24 was issued in Gurugram at 24,972, followed by Faridabad (7,402), Karnal (4,851), Panchkula (4,180), and Jind (3,109). Following instructions issued by the Haryana Police, regular special drives are being conducted across all districts of the state, it said. "The purpose of these drives is not only to curb drunken driving but also to strictly monitor lane driving, noise pollution, and misuse of red-blue lights. After reviewing weekly reports, the police headquarters has directed the districts to make these campaigns even more effective and result-oriented, the statement said. Drunk Audi driver runs over 5 people sleeping on footpath in Delhi, held

A drunk driver of an Audi car allegedly ran over five people, including two couples and an eight-year-old girl, injuring them while they were sleeping on a footpath near Shiva Camp in southwest Delhi's Vasant Vihar area, an official said on Saturday. The incident occurred around 1:45 am on July 9 and the driver of the car, Utsav Shekhar (40), was apprehended, he said, adding that his medical reports confirmed that he was drunk at the time of the incident. By the time officers reached the scene, the injured were already taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The victims have been identified as Ladhi (40), her eight-year-old daughter Bimla, husband Sabami alias Chirma (45), Ram Chander (45) and his wife Narayani (35), all residents of Rajasthan. 4 killed as 'drunk' car driver knocks down 2 motorbikes in Chhattisgarh

Four persons riding two motorcycles were killed after a speeding car crashed into their vehicles and then rammed into a tree in Chhattisgarh's Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district, police said on Monday. The car driver, who was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, was also injured in the accident which took place on Sunday night near Majhgawa village under Pendra police station limits, they said. The deceased have been identified as Gangaram Gandharv (25), Ramavtar Gond (30), Bhupendra Gond (28) and Sanu Kevat (22), Additional Superintendent of Police Om Chandel said. As per preliminary information, the victims were heading towards Pendra town on two motorcycles after celebrating Gangaram's birthday when the speeding car, which was going towards Marwahi, hit the two-wheelers head-on, he said. Over 12,000 drunk drivers fined between January 1 to June 30: Delhi police

The traffic police has fined more than 12,000 people for drunk driving from January 1 till June 30, an almost 27 per cent increase over the corresponding period of the previous year, officials said on Saturday. The highest number of fines, 770, were issued in the Rajouri Garden Circle area, followed by 514 in the Samaypur Badli Circle area, data showed. From January 1 till June 30, police have fined 12,468 people for drunk driving, compared to 9,837 during the same period last year. This is an almost 27 per cent increase in prosecutions, the traffic police said. Besides Rajouri Garden and Samaypur Badli, the Rohini (441), Punjabi Bagh (387), Mehrauli (367), Mayur Vihar (364), Narela Circle (364), Kalkaji (344), Karol Bagh (342) and the Sadar Bazar (342) circles were among the areas that reported a high number of cases of drunk driving, the data showed. To prevent drunk driving, Kolkata bars asked to start breathalyser tests

Bars in Kolkata were directed by the police to use breathalysers on customers, and prevent those found to be drunk beyond the permissible limit from driving back home. Kolkata Police commissioner Vineet Goyal on Saturday said the directive was issued to all bars in the city to prevent drunk driving. "Drunk driving is a legal offence. It's the reason for several road accidents. We have already sent a directive to all the bars in the city to purchase breathalysers to test every person leaving the bar after drinking. The bars must not allow them to drive back home in case they are found intoxicated beyond a certain level," he said. If a person is found to be drinking excessively, the bars must ensure that he is not driving or riding a bike, Goyal said. "The bar will arrange for the person to reach home by other means. If necessary, they can also take the help of the police," he added. The bars would give slips to those undergoing the tests, and these slips can be shown at checkpoints

Over 300 challan issued for drunk driving on New Year's Eve: Delhi Police

Delhi Police issued over 300 challans for drunk driving in the national capital on New Year's Eve, an increase of over 12 times compared to the previous year, officials said on Sunday. According to the official data shared by police, a total of 1,329 challans were issued for committing various traffic violations. Of the total, 318 people were fined for drunk driving, 175 for dangerous driving, 55 for driving on the wrong side, 47 for triple riding, 70 for minor driving, and 664 for driving without a helmet, while 53 vehicles were impounded on the spot, it said. Traffic police deployed 114 teams, armed with breath analyzers, to check drunk driving on Saturday, they said.
