Top officials at the Los Angeles firefighters labour union were suspended Monday after an audit conducted by its parent organisation found over $800,000 in credit card spending, some of it by the union's president, could not be accounted for. The International Association of Fire Fighters, which oversees firefighter unions across the country, wrote in a letter to the United Firefighters of Los Angeles City that it would be placing the union under a conservatorship to properly manage its finances. The union represents more than 3,600 members of the Los Angeles Fire Department, according to its LinkedIn. According to the letter from IAFF President Edward Kelly, the organisation voted to suspend union President Freddy Escobar and two other officials who made thousands of credit card transactions with no receipts or other documentation justifying them. Escobar posted a statement on his Instagram account denying the allegations. I'm going to defend myself because I have nothing to hide

Although some parts of US President Donald Trump 's agenda are getting bogged down by litigation, Elon Musk 's Department of Government Efficiency is having better luck in the courtroom. Labour unions, Democrats and federal employees have filed several lawsuits arguing that DOGE is running roughshod over privacy protections or usurping power from other branches of government. But judges appointed by Democratic and Republican presidents haven't always gone along with those arguments, at least so far. Most notably, DOGE critics are failing to obtain temporary restraining orders that would prevent Musk's team from accessing sensitive government databases. "It is not the job of the federal courts to police the security of the information systems in the executive branch," wrote US District Judge Randolph Moss in a case involving the Office of Personnel Management. Moss was appointed by President Barack Obama. The success is striking given the other challenges that Trump has faced in the
The heads of four major labour unions on Wednesday called on President Donald Trump to boost American shipbuilding and enforce tariffs and other "strong penalties" against China for its increasing dominance in that sphere. The presidents of the United Steelworkers, International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, International Brotherhood of Boilermakers and International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers argue that China's efforts have hurt American workers and national security. In a draft of the letter obtained by AP, they urged Trump to "impose tough penalties against vessels built according to the plans, policies, and actions of the Chinese Communist Party and to adopt complementary policies that rebuild America's shipbuilding capacity and workforce". Last year under President Joe Biden, the unions filed a petition seeking to address China's shipbuilding under Section 301 of the 1974 US Trade Act, hoping to start a process by which tariffs and other measures could
