Shops shut, streets tense at Delhi's Turkman Gate after demolition drive

Shuttered shops, overturned scooters, broken tiles and stones marked the narrow lanes near the Turkman Gate area here on Wednesday, as the locality remained tense and under heavy security following violence during an anti-encroachment drive. At least five police personnel were injured after some people allegedly pelted stones and glass bottles at the police during the demolition drive carried out on the land adjoining the Syed Faiz-e-Elahi Mosque and a nearby graveyard. From rooftops and from behind locked iron gates, people were seen shouting at security personnel stationed across the area. Children, too, were seen screaming from balconies and behind gates and waving handkerchiefs as they watched the scene below but most residents stayed indoors amid the heightened police presence. Children were also seen picking up broken rods and loose wires from the roadside, carefully moving the debris left behind by the drive. The roads, largely cleared of traffic, bore visible signs of unres

Delhi Home minister Ashish Sood on Wednesday said stone pelting during removal of encroachment near Faiz-e-Elahi mosque in Turkman Gate area of walled city, was "unfortunate" and warned that violence will not be tolerated. The police said an FIR has been registered in the matter and five people detained for questioning. Sood said some commercial establishments had illegally come up around the mosque, against which action was being taken in compliance with the directions of the court. Certain "criminal and mischievous elements" resorted to demonstrations and violence, which cannot be tolerated, he said, adding t

4 killed in Syria during clashes between Alawites, counterdemonstrators

Clashes broke out on Syria's coast between protesters from the Alawite religious minority and counterdemonstrators on Sunday, killing at least four people and injuring dozens of others, health officials said. The clashes came two days after a bombing at an Alawite mosque in the city of Homs killed eight people and wounded 18 others during prayers. Thousands of protesters gathered in the coastal cities of Latakia and Tartous, and elsewhere. Officials have said that preliminary investigations indicate that explosive devices were planted inside the mosque in Homs, but authorities have not publicly identified a suspect in Friday's bombing. Funerals for the dead were held on Saturday. A little-known group calling itself Saraya Ansar al-Sunna claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on its Telegram channel, in which it indicated that the attack intended to target members of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam whom hard-line Islamists consider to be ...

Mob violence was public outrage, not anti-judiciary, says Bangladesh AG

Bangladesh's Attorney General Mohammad Asaduzzaman on Saturday said last year's nationwide mob violence was not manifestation of distrust against judiciary but rather an outburst of public outrage against the deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina's ousted Awami League regime. Asaduzzaman was speaking at a function organised as part of the series of events coinciding with the first anniversary of the Awami League regime's ouster on August 5 last year after a more than a month-long student-led agitation that had witnessed violence at several places across the country. This (mob violence) is not a reflection of public distrust of the judiciary, rather an expression of anger accumulated in the past 17 years (against the past regime), Asaduzzaman said. The attorney general, however, said such anger is not justified. A leading rights group Ain o Salish Kendra (ASK) had last month reported deaths of at least 179 people in mob attacks between August 2024, when the past regime was ousted, an

Ahmadi man beaten to death by Islamists near worship site in Karachi

A mob of Islamists allegedly beat to death a member of Pakistan's minority Ahmadi community Friday while demonstrating near an Ahmadi place of worship in Karachi, a member of the community said. Police said they were investigating the killing. The victim, identified as Laeeq Cheema, died before he could receive medical treatment at a hospital in the southern port city, said Amir Mahmood, a spokesman for the Ahmadi community. Government Civil Hospital spokesperson Summaiya Tariq confirmed the death of Cheema, saying he had multiple injuries. Mahmood blamed the attack on a mob of people from the Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan, or TLP, a radical Islamist party, and said they had rallied outside the Ahmadi place of worship and tried to damage it. Senior Karachi police officer Asad Raza told local media outlets that they had deployed additional police to avoid any unrest in the city ahead of the TLP rally.
