AI will bring about a fundamental change, creating new devices, experiences and services, offering a 'massive opportunity', which offers India an 'incredible' chance to benefit from the transformation, Qualcomm President and Chief Executive Officer Cristiano Amon said on Friday. For a country like India that leapfrogged the internet and went straight to the mobile internet, it is "going to be true again" about AI, he said while speaking at the AI Impact Summit here. US chip firm Qualcomm Technologies and Tata Electronics have signed a pact under which Tata Electronics will manufacture Qualcomm Automotive Modules in Assam, a joint statement said on Friday. With this new cooperation, Tata Electronics joins Qualcomm Technologies' global network of module manufacturing partners aimed at supporting the growing global demand for modular automotive platforms. "Aligned with the 'Make in India' initiative, Qualcomm Technologies will manufacture Qualcomm Automotive Module products in India at Tata Electronics' upcoming semiconductor assembly and test (OSAT) facility in Jagiroad, Assam," the statement said. Chipset major Qualcomm expects shift of the Indian market towards the premium device segment will drive adoption of the company's latest and premium smartphone processor Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in the country. Qualcomm Technologies Group General Manager, Mobile, Compute, & XR (MCX), Alex Katouzian said that India has become a prime market for the company as it is gaining from the government's push for manufacturing, artificial intelligence and active involvement of home grown companies like Flipkart, Lenskart etc. "I think the Indian market is turning more and more into a premium tier. So I think (Snapdragon) 8 Gen 5 will get accepted quite a bit. The reputation of Snapdragon in India is really good. Recently we got data that we are number one in branding as well," Katouzian said. TCS on Wednesday said it has partnered with Qualcomm to set up an innovation lab in Bengaluru to develop smart and scalable capabilities for enterprises. The 'TCS Innovation Lab', equipped with 5G private network infrastructure and other hitech network and equipment, will develop capabilities for sectors that need agile IoT solutions, such as security and surveillance, healthcare, smart infrastructure, and manufacturing, the company said in a regulatory filing. "Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) and Qualcomm will co-create smart, scalable, and sustainable Edge AI capabilities utilising Qualcomm platforms for industries moving towards a software-driven approach to make their systems more efficient and resilient in the lab. US-based chip major Qualcomm is localising automotive module production in India and is supporting its top-tier ecosystem partners in their plan to move manufacturing into the country, a senior company official has said. Qualcomm Technologies, group general manager for automotive, industrial and embedded IoT, Nakul Duggal, told PTI that the company is investing heavily in India to support local automotive companies. "We build a lot of modules. Those modules are typically built in Taiwan, or China, or Korea, but we are now actively working in India to localise this. We, of course, partner with our Tier 1 ecosystem, such that as they move their manufacturing to India, we have been supporting them," he said. Duggal said that Qualcomm is a fabless company, which means it designs the chips but doesn't manufacture them.
