Union Steel Minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia on Friday inaugurated a Rs 149-crore beneficiation project of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) at Kanker in Chhattisgarh. The minister virtually inaugurated the SAIL's Silica Reduction Plant set up at the company's Dalli iron ore mines. In his address, Scindia said the new plant is an important milestone as it will help the steel maker utilise the low-grade ore from the Dalli mines through the beneficiation process. Around 80 per cent of the reserves of the iron ore mine has been utilized, he said adding certain issues were coming in the utilisation of the remaining 20 per cent reserve like the Fe or iron content was below 60 per cent and silica content was as high as 10 per cent. The plant will improve the Fe content to 62-64 per cent and bring down the silica content to 2-3 per cent. Four projects of Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) worth Rs 2,338 crore are facing delay due to reasons like delayed placement of orders and supply of materials/equipment, Parliament was informed on Monday. However, there is no cost overrun in these projects, Union steel minister Jyotiraditya M Scindia said in a reply to Rajya Sabha. As per the information provided by the minister, SAIL is executing a project of the modification in the washing circuit of CSW plant of Dalli mines at Rs 168 crore in Chhattisgarh and another project is installation of a new sinter plant with an investment of Rs 1,111 crore at its Bokaro Steel Plant in Jharkhand. SAIL is also rebuilding coke oven battery -2 (COB-2) along with augmenting coke handling and gas handling facility with an investment of about Rs 434 crore at its Rourkela Steel Plant in Odisha and rebuilding COB-7 & 8 at Rs 625 crore at Bhilai Steel Plant in Chhattisgarh, he said. Soon after it became the net exporter of steel, India plans to touch double digit exports of the commodity in the next 2-3 years, Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh said today.The minister, while addressing the media on three-year achievements of Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government, said that the country was aiming for double digit exports even as the government's continued thrust would be to increase steel consumption in the domestic market.As per an official the steel exports, currently 8.2 million tonnes are likely to be close to 10 million tonnes in three years time. Steel exports in 2016-17 more than doubled from 4 million tonnes in 2015-16 partly due to subdued domestic demand.During the same fiscal, imports were reduced by 37 per cent at 7.42 MT as a result of government initiatives, he said.Meanwhile, the minister said, India was headed towards becoming the second largest steel producer in the world as India added 16.5 million tonnes of crude steel capacity ...
