Who is Jyotiraditya Scindia?
Jyotiraditya Madhavrao Scindia is an Indian politician and Union Minister of Communications. He served as the Minister of Civil Aviation and Steel in the second term of the Narendra Modi government.
He was a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha representing the state of Madhya Pradesh from 2020 till his win in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.[1] He is a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, representing the Guna constituency in Madhya Pradesh from 2002 until his defeat in the 2019 Indian general election, and then since 4 June 2024.
Early life
Scindia was born on January 1, 1971 in Mumbai. He is a grandson of Jiwajirao Scindia, and the son of politician Madhavrao Scindia, the last leader of the princely state of Gwalior during the British Raj in India. Jyotiraditya was momentarily the nominal Crown prince of Gwalior in 1971, until the privy totes and titles of Indian royals were annulled by the government in 1971.
He was taught at Campion School, Mumbai and at The Doon School, Dehradun. Scindia got admission to the University of Delhi's St. Stephen's College, Delhi. He then transferred to Harvard College, Harvard University's undergraduate liberal arts college and graduated in BA Economics in 1993. He graduated from Stanford Graduate School of Business with a Master of Business Administration degree in 2001.
Political career
Madhavrao Scindia, Scindia's father and a sitting MP, died in an aeroplane crash in Uttar Pradesh on September 30, 2001, leaving the Guna constituency vacant. On 18 December, he officially joined the INC and vowed to maintain the "secular, liberal and social justice values" of his dad. Scindia served as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha from 2002 until his defeat in the Indian general election in 2019. He represented the Guna constituency in Madhya Pradesh at that time. He has been a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 2020 and was previously a member of the Indian National Congress (INC) from 2001 to 2020. While from the INC, he served as the Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Power and Corporate in the second Manmohan Singh ministry from 2012 to 2014.
He served as the Minister of State for Communication in 2007, later as minister of state independent charge for Power in a cabinet reshuffle which drafted various more youthful politicians into the Indian cabinet, including two different scions of regal families, RPN Singh and Jitendra Singh.
He was elected from Guna in 2014. He was defeated by Krishna Pal Singh Yadav for his seat in 2019. In 2019, he was designated as General Secretary in-charge for Uttar Pradesh West alongside Priyanka Gandhi Vadra.
Scinidia left Congress on March 10, 2020, citing discontent with INC leadership. After that, a statement from the Congress party said that he had been “kicked out” for "anti-party activities." On March 11, 2020, he joined the BJP. In addition to him, his other loyal MLAs quit the INC and their positions.
