Using Alexa on the phone app to search for tracks is something of a hit and miss

As an Amazon Prime subscriber since it launched, I’ve seen it evolve into a video- and now audio-streaming service over the years. Yet, Amazon Prime Music, part of my Prime subscription (Rs 999 per year), was usually called into service only when I wanted to hear music on my Alexa devices. Not anymore, though.

Since I’m someone who always loves a playlist in the background, I’m subscribed to most music streaming services over my multiple devices. But for the past few months, I’ve been reaching out more regularly to Prime Music, mostly because of its wonderfully curated playlists.

While I prefer Apple Music for serious listening, I’ve been making use of Amazon’s playlists while lounging at home.

The quality is just perfect for streaming. But while you would get most popular tracks and a good mix of music in Indian languages, if you love discovering new music (yes, Bandcamp regulars), you’d be disappointed.

Using Alexa on the phone app to search for tracks is something of a hit and miss.

When I asked Alexa to play songs of Hemant Kumar, it ended up mixing the music legend’s Hindi and Bengali songs; ditto with Kishore Kumar. That said, the app’s (as well as the Web) interface is mostly basic and easy to use. One can also download songs on the phone. And the playlists get better with time.

Amazon Prime Music may not be a standout music streaming service people will pay to use, but is a good proposition for all Amazon Prime members.

One subscription. Two world-class reads.
