Bangalore international airport is now plastic free

All the beverage, retail concessionaires on the 4,000 acre premises have shifted to cloth or paper bags

Bangalore international airport is now plastic free. As part of its commitment to make it a green airport, the management of Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL) has completely switched over to eco-friendly bags made of cloth and paper.

All the food and beverage outlets as well as retail concessionaires on the 4,000 acre premises have shifted to use of cloth or paper bags in place of plastic. About 15 retail and 20 F&B stores and BIAL management have implemented the new concept. The impact of the decision leads to reduction of about 35,000 plastic bags every month, catering to the retail across 500 categories and 5,000 brands. This initiative will result in the savings of 500,000 plastic bags annually, a BIAL statement said.

The direct impact of this change is at two levels – firstly on the environment and secondly on the elevated livelihood of thousands of women engaged with “Ubuntu at Work” at rural locations across South India. These women make and provide cloth bags to the airport partners and will supply approximately 360,000 bags.
