Of these shows, the most successful was Magnificent Century, which Bhutto refers to as the “Holy Grail” of dizi. This is based on the story of the tenth Ottoman Sultan, Suleiman the Magnificent, and revolves around his love affair with a concubine from his harem. Sold to nearly 90 countries, it is estimated that the show has been viewed by 500 million people worldwide. And in some ways, the popularity of these dramas has foreshadowed the rise of the Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, as “he openly charts an Ottoman revival with himself as Sultan”. In one of them, The Last Emperor, the Sultan is modelled closely on Erdogan, with a “symbiosis between the two proud leaders who were unafraid to confront the West and who dreamed of positioning Turkey as central to pan-Muslim unity”.
